The Libyan rebels' Transitional National Council has moved its headquarters from their stronghold in Benghazi to the capital Tripoli, broadcaster Al Jazeera reported Friday.

Ali al-Tarhuni, who is responsible for finance and oil in the opposition council, said the council had started operating in Tripoli, according to the Doha-based television, DPA reported.

Al-Tarhuni arrived in the Libyan capital late Wednesday, hours after the rebels drove loyalists to the fugitive leader Moamer Gaddafi out of areas in southern Tripoli following fierce fighting.

Two rebels were killed late Wednesday during clashes with pro-Gaddafi fighters in Tripoli's Bu Salim district where Saif al-Islam, the son of the Libyan leader, was believed to be hiding.

Chairman of the opposition council Mustafa Abdul Jalil will move to Tripoli "when the security situation improves," Al Jazeera quoted al-Tarhuni as saying.

Half of the council's members have already moved to Tripoli where rebels began work to re-establish security and provide basic services for residents.
