Two policemen were killed and another was wounded Monday by unidentified gunmen at a police checkpoint in eastern Baghdad, a local police source said, Xinhua reported.
The attack happened in the Ghadeer district of eastern Baghdad Monday evening and claimed two lives, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.
The assailants used pistols with silencers and fled the scene after the killing, the source added.
The attack came a day after a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in Baghdad, killing 29 worshippers and wounding dozens more.
Violence in Iraq has seen an uptick in recent months as the Iraqi government prepares to negotiate with Washington to let some U.S. troops stay beyond the year-end deadline.
