The UN Security Council on Wednesday transferred the UN membership application from the Palestinian Authority to a legal committee to review its validity , dpa reported.
The application was submitted last week by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas when he attended the UN General Assembly session in New York.
The 15-nation council held an unusual open session to make the transfer. In the past, any application went automatically to the committee.
Council President Nawaf Salam said the committee will meet on Friday to discuss the Palestinian demand.
