At least 94 children have been killed this year in Yemen, caught in crossfire during clashes between protesters and the Yemeni government, the UN Children Fund said Wednesday, DPA reported.
UNICEF said 240 children were injured by gunfire or shelling since the waves of unrest erupted earlier this year.
"UNICEF deplores children being caught in the crossfire in Yemen and urges all parties to the conflict to do their utmost to spare civilians, especially women and children," said Anthony Lake, director of the New York-based UN agency.
Lake said the unrest in Yemen has had severe effects on children, many of whom require long-term care before they can recover. He said children in Yemen were already suffering from malnutrition and poverty before the popular unrest, with 43 per cent of country's 3.6 million children under 5 considered underweight and 58 per cent suffering stunted growth.
