Death toll in Syrian demonstrations reaches 26

The country's security forces killed 26 people and injured many others during the demonstrations in various cities in Syria, Al-Jazeera TV channel reported.

Demonstrations are being held in major cities of Syria - Homs, Latakia and others.

Demonstrators demand President Bashar al-Assad's immediate resignation.
The demonstrations in Syria have intensified after the death of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who was killed last week.

Syria has been experiencing continuous anti-government protests for almost seven months.

According to UN statistics, the number of clash victims exceeded 3,000 people. Syrian authorities say more than 1,500 people died on both sides.

The opposition demands President Bashar al-Assad's resignation and political reforms. The U.S. and EU urged Assad to resign and insist on imposing sanctions against the country.

Russia and China used veto during voting on the draft resolution on Syria in the UN Security Council on Oct.4. The document envisages sanctions if the Syrian authorities continue to suppress opposition protests.
