Syrian sets himself ablaze to protest police harassment

A father set himself ablaze in Syria on Friday to protest harassment by police demanding that he disclose the whereabouts of his son, an opposition activist, the broadcaster Al Jazeera reported.

The man, identified as Abu Fadi, burned himself in the coastal city of Jableh to stop police from forcing him to say where his son, Fadi, was hiding, Syrian activist Omar al-Jablawi said, dpa reported.

"Abu Fadi was threatened with killing ... and so was his other son Abdel Hadi," al-Jablawi claimed. He did not say how serious Abu Fadi's injuries were.
