Opposition urges Arab League to freeze Syria's membership

The opposition Syrian National Council called Wednesday for the Arab League to freeze the country's membership in the pan-Arab organization and recognize the council as Syria's sole representative dpa reported

"The Arab League should freeze Syria's membership and ensure the protection of civilians," the newly formed council said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Omar Idlibi, the spokesman for the opposition Local Coordination Committees, accused the Syrian government of "manoeuvring."

"How can we sit down with a government that is still killing our people on the ground?" Idlibi told dpa.

He was commenting on a suggestion by the Arab League for talks between the Syrian government and opposition.
