Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh telephoned the new Tunisian prime minster on Sunday to congratulate him on his election victory Maan reported

The Gaza prime minister spoke with Hammadi al-Jabali and expressed his best wishes for the Tunisian people, a statement said.

Haniyeh stressed that ties between Tunisia and Palestine will always be strong, and invited Jabali to visit Palestine.

Jabali, a leader in the Tunisian political party Ennahda, applauded the Palestinian people for their struggle, saying that their steadfastness provided inspiration to Tunisia and the Arab world.

Ennahda won Tunisia's, and the Arab Spring's, first democratic elections at the end of October.

The self immolation of Tunisian street vendor Muhammad Bouazizi in December 2010 became a catalyst for a popular uprising in Tunisia, which spread to other Arab countries.
