The US State Department Friday said Egypt's military government promised to halt the crackdown against human rights and democracy advocates, The New York Times reported Friday.
Still, Egyptian state media continued to hurl accusations that activists described as an effort to tarnish their image, dpa quoted the Times as reporting.
The crackdown on 17 Egyptian and foreign non-government organizations in Cairo has triggered sharp reaction worldwide.
