Hundreds of Jordanians and Syrians protesters on Wednesday attempted to break into the Syrian embassy in Amman on Wednesday, witnesses told Xinhua.

Security forces, heavily deployed around the embassy, prevented the protesters from storming the compound, witnesses said.

Some 1,000 Jordanian and Syrian demonstrators took part in Wednesday's sit-in before the Syrian embassy in the Jordanian capital.

The demonstrators called for the expulsion of the Syrian ambassador and the shutdown of the embassy in a protest against the bloodshed in the unrest-hit country.

Also on Wednesday, Hammam Saeed, leader of the Muslim Brotherhood of Jordan, called on the government to withdraw its ambassador from Damascus and to expel the Syrian ambassador in Amman in response to what he called crimes against the Syrian civilians.
