UN under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs Valerie Amos, who had arrived in the Syrian capital of Damascus after midnight Tuesday, held talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Wednesday, sources told Xinhua.

There are no immediate details on the talks between Amos and Moallem, while sources told Xinhua anonymously that Amos is on her way to the central province of Homs which has emerged as the epicenter of armed insurgency against the rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Amos' three-day visit to Syria meant to convince the authorities of allowing unhindered humanitarian access to restive Syrian cities, mainly Homs.

On Monday, Syria said it welcomes Amos' visit and said she would talk with Moallem, deputy foreign minister Faisal Mekdad and head of the Syrian Red Crescent.

Meanwhile, Syria's private al-Watan newspaper said Wednesday that residents in Baba Amr neighborhood in Homs have started to return home after government troops "cleansed" the area of armed men who had been fighting against the army for nearly a month.
