UN reports rise in Syrian refugees in Jordan

The United Nations said on Thursday that the number of registered Syrian refugees in Jordan had reached 12,500, adding it was struggling to deal with the influx, dpa reported.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is struggling to provide medical and food aid to many of the estimated 100,000 Syrian refugees in Syria.

UN officials say fear of reprisal has prevented most refugees from registering. Aid agencies say some 30,000 refugees in Jordan are in need of aid.

Jordan continues to receive Syrians fleeing the conflict back home but it has refused to set up refugee camps out for fear that the Syrian government might interpret such move as official support for rebels.
