Arab World Materials 4 July 2012 08:09 (UTC +04:00)

Heavy gunfire was heard Tuesday evening in Lebanon's northern Wadi Khaled region on the border with Syria, followed by heavy Lebanese army deployment, eyewitnesses told Xinhua.

Residents in the area told Xinhua that some gunmen infiltrated into agricultural lands on the Lebanese side of the border and started shooting towards the Macharfeh village in the Syrian side, which resulted in an exchange of gunfire that lasted about 15 minutes.

No casualties were reported.

A security source confirmed to Xinhua the shooting, while the Lebanese army patrolled the area and launched an investigation into the incident.

A local source in Wadi Khaled said a number of gunmen riding motorcycles drove very close to an illegal crossing on the border and fired their guns towards Syrian army posts in the Masharfeh village, which prompted a response from the Syrians.
