Syria is awaiting the outcome of a regional tour by the international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi who has proposed a truce during a Muslim holiday later this month, state television reported Wednesday.

Brahimi is in Lebanon, the latest stop in his second tour of the region that has included talks in Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Egypt. Unconfirmed media reports said he would travel to Syria on Thursday, dpa reported.

Syrian television reported that officials were looking forward to the peace envoy's arrival in Damascus.

Brahimi said Monday he was working to secure a three-day ceasefire over the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha, which starts on October 26.

The main opposition Syrian National Council cautiously welcomed the proposal, putting the onus on the government to enforce a truce.

The rebel Free Syrian Army however rejected the proposal, saying a truce would give the regime an opportunity to prepare for new attacks.

Government forces on Wednesday mounted at least six air raids on pro-rebel villages in the northern province of Idlib, the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The organization also reported heavy fighting between government troops and rebels near the Kowriss military airport in the embattled northern city of Aleppo.

News coming out of Syria cannot be independently verified, as authorities have barred most foreign media from the country since the uprising began in March last year.
