UN steps in to feed Palestinian refugee camp in Syria

Arab World Materials 21 December 2012 17:46 (UTC +04:00)

The United Nations said Friday it would step in to provide food to over a 100,000 people who have fled from a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria because of the ongoing civil war, dpa reported.

The camp in Yarmouk, eight kilometers away from Damascus, also hosted internally displaced Syrians. People have fled in recent days because fighting has erupted nearby, the World Food Programme (WFP), a Rome-based UN agency, said.

"We remain committed to supporting the most vulnerable in Syria. No one should go hungry," WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin said. The agency earmarked 1.5 million dollars - enough to feed 125,000 people for three months, it said.
