Egypt to announce official referendum results

Arab World Materials 25 December 2012 15:01 (UTC +04:00)

Egypt's electoral commission will announce on Tuesday evening the officials results of a referendum on a draft constitution favoured by supporters of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, dpa reported.

Preliminary results, according to Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and state media, showed the majority of voters approving the charter.

Egypt's opposition have rejected the vote, claiming numerous instances of "fraud and violations."

Approval of the proposed charter would clear the way for elections of the lower house of parliament to take place within 60 days. The Islamist-dominated Shura Council, or upper house, would be given the authority to legislate until a new legislature is elected.
