The retrial of former Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak for alleged complicity in the killing of protesters in 2011 is to begin in Cairo on Saturday dpa reported.

Some 3,000 security officers were deployed at a makeshift court in the Police Academy on the outskirts of Cairo, state media reported.

Mubarak and his then interior minister, Habib al-Adli, were convicted and handed life sentences in June. But in January, Egypt's highest court accepted their appeals and ordered a retrial.

Mubarak was ousted in February 2011 after an 18-day popular uprising. More than 840 people were killed in the revolt.

The 85-year-old is currently being held at a hospital at Tora prison in southern Cairo.

He was sent back to the prison in April from a military hospital where he had stayed for four months after his health had reportedly deteriorated following a fall in December.

The retrial comes almost a month after a presiding judge withdrew from hearing the case. Chief judge Mahmoud al-Rashidi has been named to take over the trial.

Al-Adli and six former security chiefs are also to appear for the retrial on charges related to the deaths of protesters.

An independent Egyptian fact-finding commission found last year that at least 846 people were killed and more than 6,000 wounded during the revolt against Mubarak.

Also standing retrial are Mubarak's sons, Alaa and Gamal, for corruption charges.

Hussein Salem, a business tycoon and an associate of Mubarak, is to be tried in absentia for alleged waste of public money.
