At least two civilians were shot dead and one was seriously injured on Friday evening in four armed attacks against different security points in Egypt's North Sinai governorate, a security source told Xinhua.

"While attacking security check points, in Granada, al-Dahiya and al-Reesa districts in Arish city, several militants fired rockets and heavy artilleries, which mistakenly hit nearby houses and killed the civilians," the source explained.

The armed forces and policemen exchanged fire with the gunmen who managed to flee the scene.

Over the past two weeks, more than 20 people, including security men and civilians, were killed in similar armed attacks on security premises and checkpoints in North Sinai.

The recurrent attacks came after the Egyptian army ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi earlier this month.

Security sources say the attacks are carried out by Islamist Jihadist groups affiliated with Morsi's supporters.
