Nine people were killed in clashes across Egypt between supporters and opponents of ousted president Mohammed Morsi, a health ministry official said Tuesday, dpa reported.

The clashes began Monday when pro-Morsi demonstrators approached central Cairo's Tahrir Square, where opponents of the toppled Islamist leader have been holding protests.

Clashes in Giza province on the outskirts of Cairo and Qalyoub town, north of Cairo, continued until early Tuesday.

More than 85 people were injured in the fighting, Al-Ahram newspaper reported.

Dozens have been killed since Morsi was ousted by the army on July 3 after mass street protests demanding his removal from power.

Morsi's supporters have been protesting in Cairo since his removal. They vow to continue protests until his reinstatement.
