US Secretary of State John Kerry Monday welcomed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's early compliance with a plan to destroy Syria's chemical weapons arsenal, dpa reported.
"It's a good beginning and we should welcome a good beginning," Kerry said after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Bali, Indonesia.
On Sunday international inspectors began destroying Syria's chemical weapons and equipment under a US-Russian disarmament plan backed by a UN Security Council resolution.
The plan aims to have Syria's chemical weapons arsenal removed or destroyed by mid-2014.
