British people are facing plunging temperatures after a unusually warm December, with the first snow of the new year expected this week in the country, weather forecasters said Thursday, Trend reports citing Xinhua.

While Britain enjoyed above-average temperatures in the last month of 2019, January is set to see the mercury drop, with cold weather and showers expected across the country until the end of the month.

A spokesman for the Met Office said there could be snow this week in Scotland.

"There could be snow on Friday across the north of Scotland ... generally temperatures are average this month," he said.

Northern England could also see some snow later this month, he added.
