Israeli protestors block crossing to protest soldier's captivity

Israel Materials 19 October 2008 13:49 (UTC +04:00)

Dozens of Israeli demonstrators blocked the Kerem Salom crossing point to the Gaza Strip Sunday, to protest Israel allowing goods into the salient while talks to free a captive Israeli soldier in the enclave fail to make progress, dpa reported.

The protestors were trying to prevent trucks from entering the strip, Israel Radio reported.

Some of the truck divers expressed solidarity with the demonstration by wearing shirts adorned with a picture of Gilad Shalit, who was snatched during a cross-border raid by Palestinian militants on June 25, 2006.

Egyptian-sponsored negotiations over his release have so far come to naught, with Israel refusing to free the over 1,000 jailed Palestinians Hamas is demanding.

A rally, at the exact spot Shalit was snatched, is slated to take place Sunday afternoon.
