Israel, Jerusalem, 29 November / Trend corr. A.Gut/ American Jews persuade the new elected US President Barack Obama to transfer the US Embassy in Israel from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, which the international community does not recognize as the capital of the Jewish state, Ynet agency reported.

This transfer of the US diplomatic representation would make the United States the only country, having Embassy in Jerusalem, which both Israelis and Palestinians regard as their capital.

Act on Embassy in Jerusalem requires the United States to transfer the Embassy to Jerusalem in 1999, whilst President George W Bush and his precursor Bill Clinton postponed its fulfillment every six months.

On 27 November about 100 members of the American Jewish Orthodox Union assembles around area, which the Congress allocated in 1995 to construct future American Embassy in the west of Jerusalem. They sang the US State Anthem and demanded to transfer the US Embassy to Jerusalem. Obama will come into power on 20 January in 2009.

"President Obama likes to use a word of 'change'. This is time for changes. At present it is high time to display true support to Israel by transferring the Embassy in Jerusalem," Stephen Savitsky, the President of the Orthodox Union, said.

If the US Embassy was transferred to Jerusalem, other countries would follow this action, Dani Ayalon, former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, said.

Jerusalem is a centre of three religions and confusion of monuments of history, culture and nations with a lot of sights. Being the capital of the ancient Israeli Kingdom in the past, Jerusalem is the official capital of Israel and comprises all governmental institutions. However, considerable part of the international community has not yet recognized the Israeli sovereignty over the east part of the city.
