An Australian has been wounded in a deadly Israeli commando raid on ships taking humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith confirmed on Tuesday, Xinhua reported.
Smith said one Australian was shot in the leg during the attack and was being treated in an Israeli hospital, without identifying the person.
"We don't have any information that any other Australians has been caught up either injured or killed at this stage," Smith told ABC Radio.
Consular officials were working "very actively" and " strenuously" to determine the welfare of other Australians who may have been aboard the flotilla.
"It's a terrible and shocking incident and people have genuinely been shocked by it," Smith said, adding it was appropriate for Australia to deplore the violence and deaths.
Australia wanted Israel to effect "a credible investigation that needs to be subject to the scrutiny of the international community through the (United Nations) security council."
"The onus is on Israel to provide a detailed explanation as to these matters," Smith said.
Israel also would have to explain its use of force and possible use of disproportionate force, Smith said.
Australia maintained its view that Israel should ease its blockade of Gaza to allow aid and humanitarian assistance through.
Israel has come under condemn from the international community following the attack on Monday, which left at least nine protesters dead, most of them reportedly Turkish.
Much of the criticism has focused on Israel's use of live ammunition against the pro-Palestinian activists who were in international waters as they sought to run the blockade that Israel has imposed on Gaza since the Islamist Hamas movement seized control of the territory in 2007.
Israel claims activists aboard attacked its commandos, while the flotilla's organizers said the Israeli forces opened fire first.
Two other Australians, Fairfax journalists Paul McGeough and Kate Geraghty, were on board one of the ships but were not hurt. They have been detained in an Israeli detention center.
