Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport was placed on alert Wednesday, after a passenger plane reported smoke coming from its cockpit at take-off and prepared to make an emergency landing.

Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport was placed on alert Wednesday, after a passenger plane reported smoke coming from its cockpit at take-off and prepared to make an emergency landing.

A reporter at the scene told Israel Radio the plane was circling, emptying its fuel tanks, before attempting to land at the airport near Tel Aviv, DPA reported.

Reports said the Boeing 777 from Continental Airlines had 280 passengers on board.
