A group of seven Italian pro-Palestinian activists were on Sunday prevented from boarding an Alitalia flight bound for Israel from Rome's Leonardo Da Vinci airport, dpa quoted media reports as saying.

The group was handed a statement at a check-in desk in which they were notified that Israeli authorities had forbidden them from flying to Tel Aviv, the ANSA news agency reported.

The activists, including a well-known Italian leftist newspaper cartoonist, Vauro Senesi, were part of the so-called "Welcome to Palestine 2012" initiative - a plan by hundreds of protesters to fly to Israel's Ben-Gurion International Airport, near Tel Aviv.
