Court finds former Israeli premier Olmert guilty of corruption Eds: Releads with verdict

An Israeli court on Tuesday found former prime minister Ehud Olmert guilty of breach of trust in one corruption case but acquitted him of two other charges, dpa reported.

The guilty verdict related to charges that as trade and industry minister Olmert favoured business clients of a friend, who applied for state grants and other benefits with the ministry's investment arm.

The former premier was found not guilty on the two main corruption counts in the trial.
One charge alleged that he accepted envelopes with large amounts of cash from a Jewish-American businessman.

The other charge claimed that he double- and triple-billed charities for fundraising trips abroad.

All three accusations against Olmert stemmed from the period he served as mayor of Jerusalem between 1993 and 2003, and as a minister from 2003 until he became prime minister in 2006.

Olmert denied any wrongdoing.

The allegations, which surfaced in 2008, led to Olmert's resignation and prompted an early election.
