Netanyahu: Fate of nation and the settlements hinges on next election

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the election of a left-wing government would undo all the world he has done in support of the settlement movement in the West Bank, at the beginning of a meeting with settler leaders in Jerusalem on Wednesday morning, Trend reports referring to The Jerusalem Post.

“We must win the upcoming election," Netanyahu said. "This is a battle over our home. The fate of the state and the settlements is not self-evident."

“We also have hard work to do with the current US administration in order to continue to bring about the great achievements we have brought to the settlements," Netanyahu added. "This is not guaranteed, because later on, under a leftist government, everything could be reversed in a moment.

Key settler leaders has earlier said that they planned to boycott the meeting with Netanyahu to protest his failure to meet their demands with regard to security measures in the West Bank.

Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan, Binyamin Regional Council head Israel Ganz and Kiryat Arba Council head Eliyahu Libman sent a letter to Netanyahu explaining their reasons for skipping the meeting.

It included his failure to restore NIS 400 million in budget cuts for security and to take significant measures in support of new settlement building.

Their demands for government action are in response to when the latest wave of of terror, "were rejected, evaded, and ignored."

Other council heads including some Yesha Council leaders will attend the meeting.

"I will come to meet with the prime minister as planned, it is inconceivable that we, the residents of Judea and Samaria who are fighting against boycotts, are boycotting our own meeting with the prime minister," Beit El Local Council spokesperson Dudi Avitan said. "I propose to all the council heads in Judea and Samaria to unite and come to a meeting with the prime minister, our strength is in our unity."

"The heads of the local councils who are interested in discussing ways to strengthen their settlements for their residents and their communities will come," the Prime Minister's Office said in response to those boycotting the meeting.

The announcement comes one day after Netanyahu gave the the green light to build nearly 2,000 new settler homes in the West Bank and two days after the Knesset announced early elections.
