( Kommersant ) - Russia rebuffs any cooperation with repent Taliban militants in Afghanistan, RF Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko announced in New York.

Quite a few have created illusions, Yakovenko said, that reconciling with allegedly repent Taliban insurgents could stabilize situation in the region, but it isn't true.

Moscow stands for isolating the extremist leaders, first of all the ones added to the sanctioned lists of the United Nations Security Council Committee 1267, also known as the Al-Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee. All other approaches, but for preserving the chance for the ordinary fighters with no blood on the hands to get back to the peaceful life, will enable the Taliban members to gradually penetrate into power.

Even remorseful, the Taliban leaders will remain bearers and disseminators of radical Islam, Yakovenko emphasized.

The top-ranked diplomat of Russia expressed greatest concern about further aggravation of the military and political situation in the country, which could be blamed on continuing growth in aggressiveness of the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and other extremists. The militants actually control quite a few regions in Afghanistan, setting up parallel bodies of power there.
