( AFP ) - Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Barcelona on Saturday to protest against the recent chaos in the local train system after service was suspended for 42 days.

The platform the Right to Decide (PDD) called for the protest to demand that infrastructure management in Catalonia be transferred to the autonomous government there, and also demanded more "respect" for the northeastern region of Spain.

Organisers estimate that 700,000 turned out, while police held the figure at 200,000.

"We are a nation and we say 'that's enough'. We have the right to decide our infrastructure," according to PDD organisers.

The marchers are calling for trains to be put on track again after 42 days of suspended service due to a landslide triggered by work on high-speed train lines.
