( dpa ) - A motorist died and three passengers were seriously injured late Saturday in a head-on collision on the German autobahn system with a driver travelling in the wrong direction on the carriageway.

Police said they had no immediate clue as to why the wrong-way driver had accelerated up a slip road into the oncoming traffic at Rhueden on Highway 7 between the cities of Goettingen and Hanover.

The collision, which led to a full closure of the highway, occurred after the wrong-way driver had proceeded only a few metres.
