( dpa ) - A stand requested by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to provide him with an extra 20 centrimetres as he spoke before the Romanian parliament caused some merriment in the house, the Romanian news agency Mediafax reported Monday.

After Sarkozy's appearance, parliamentarians continued a debate without removing the stand, and while some speakers like Sarkozy were glad of the added stature, many stood so high over the podium that it was difficult for them to speak into the microphone.

Sarkozy was in Bucharest for a five-hour official visit.
