( dpa )- The UN Security Council was convened for an urgent meeting on Sunday following the declaration of independence by the Serbian breakaway Kosovo province, French diplomats said.

They said Russia had called for the meeting, which was a predictable move as it opposed the secession of Kosovo from Serbia.

Of the council's five permanent members with veto power, Russia and China oppose Kosovo's independence while the United States, France and Britain support it.
