"We demand an end to the violence and all terrorist activities against innocent civilians," Johndroe said in a statement Sunday.

He added: "There is no clear difference between missile attacks by terrorists on civilian targets and self-defence actions."

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had earlier announced a trip to the Middle East beginning on Monday in support of peace negotiations.

According to officials from the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza, 112 Palestinians have been killed in the Strip since Wednesday, including 26 children.

The Israeli chief of staff said earlier Sunday that out of 100 Palestinians killed 90 were militants.

The United Nations Security Council has called on both parties to end the violence.
