A female suicide bomber blew herself up Tuesday, injuring a local official and five people in Iraq's restive Diyala province, while four US soldiers were killed in rocket or mortar attacks in Baghdad, dpa reported.

The woman wearing an explosive belt targeted the motorcade of the head of the Sadiyah municipality, injuring him and five of his companions near the municipal building in Diyala, a police source told the Voices of Iraq news agency.

Other media reports said two people were killed in the attack in the town 150 kilometres north-east of Baghdad.

Diyala is the centre stage for insurgent activities, mainly the Sunni Islamic State of Iraq group affiliated with the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Meanwhile, the US military said four of its soldiers were killed in attacks in Baghdad on Monday.

Three of the soldiers were killed in the south-eastern district of New Baghdad while the other soldier died in Kazimiyah in north Baghdad, the military said Monday.

US and Iraqi troops have been battling the Mahdi Army of radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr for over a month in Sadr City.
