Libertarians nominate former Republican Barr for president

Former Republican congressman Bob Barr was nominated Sunday as the Libertarian Party's presidential candidate, the dpa reported.

"I'm sure we will emerge here with the strongest ticket in the history of the Libertarian Party," Barr said after accepting the nomination at the party's convention in Denver, Colorado. "I want everybody to remember that we only have 163 days to win this election. We cannot waste one single day."

The Libertarians, who generally espouse free-market radical liberalism, are the largest of the so-called third parties in US politics, far behind the two major parties, the conservative Republicans and the left-leaning Democrats.

Barr could take a small but decisive number of votes from presumptive Republican nominee in some key states in the November general elections.
