Sixteen people were killed and six injured
when a bus fell into a gorge in the northern Indian hill state of Himachal
Pradesh on Sunday, news reports said.
The state-run bus was on its way to Rampur town from a nearby village when it
fell into a 50-metre gorge, PTI news agency reported. The accident occurred
about 130 kilometres north of state capital Shimla.
Most of the accident victims were local people. The dead included 11 men and
five women, Rampur police official Puran Chand said. He said the driver of the
bus was injured in the accident.
According to World Road Statistics data, which gives figures for India for 2005, a total of 94,985 people died in road accidents that year, dpa
reported.
