( dpa ) - A man died Wednesday in Buenos Aires when he was hit in the head by a heavy street lamp post in the historic Plaza de Mayo, where he was planning to attend a pro-government rally later in the day.

The man, 21, was injured and taken to a nearby hospital, but died a few minutes after admission.

Alberto Crescenti, general director of the state emergency rescue service SAME, said the man suffered "severe head trauma" and was in a coma when he arrived.

He had travelled to Buenos Aires for the rally from the northern Argentine province of Tucuman.

Crescenti condemned demonstrators who attacked the doctor and her assistant who went to the Plaza de Mayo to treat the injured man.

Several banners with political propaganda were tied to trees and lamp posts in the central square.
