Plane veers off Madrid runway, 45 deaths confirmed

At 45 people have been confirmed dead when an airplane veered off the runway on Wednesday as it attempted to take off from Madrid-Barajas airport, dpa reported.

As many as 44 people were reported injured out of the 164 people on board.

According to rescue services, the Spainair type MD-80 aircraft never achieved flight, but simply went off the end of the runway, where it broke apart and burst into flames.

The flight was destined for Gran Canaria.
