Z.Novozotovski / The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine declares that
the calls of the leaders of the oppositional Party of Regions to recognize the
independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia harm the national interests of Ukraine, the press service of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine reported on 29 August.
"Foreign Ministry of Ukraine is forced to regretfully state that the position of the Party of Regions in the question of Russian-Georgian conflict, and especially the calls of its leaders to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia harm the national interests of Ukraine," the Ministry's statement says.
Earlier the leader of the Party of Regions, Victor Yanukovich, expressed the opinion that Ukraine must recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
"Russian Federation's recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is logical continuation of the process, beginning to which was established by the recognition of the independence of Kosovo by the Western countries," said Yanukovich.
