Leipheimer wins time trial, takes overall lead in Spain

US rider Levi Leipheimer of the Astana team won the individual time trial on the fifth stage of cycling's Tour of Spain to take the overall lead. ( dpa )

Leipheimer set a time of 50 minutes 57 seconds for the 42.5-kilometre stretch starting and finishing in Ciudad Real.

Sylvain Chavanel of France, riding for Cofidis, was 12 seconds back in second place, with Italien Manuel Quinziato of Liquigas 33 seconds behind in third spot.

The time trial shook up the Vuelta leader board, with Leipheimer taking the gold jersey as overall leader, just two seconds ahead of Chavanel and Spain's Alejandro Valverde of Team Caisse d'Epargne third, 30 seconds behind Leipheimer.
