Most presidents have airports, libraries and schools named after them, dpa reported.

But such is the unpopularity of President George W Busht that liberal activists in San Francisco proposed to rename a city sewage plant after him.

The activists earlier this year gathered enough signatures to propose a ballot measure to rename the city-owned Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant to the George W Bush Sewage Plant.

However, official tallies released Wednesday showed that voters in the stridently liberal city balked at handing out such an insult to the elected leader of their country. They rejected the measure by a vote of 69 per cent to 31 per cent.

In another controversial ballot measure, San Francisco voters rejected a measure to decriminalize prostitution and ban police from arresting prostitutes and their customers. The measure was defeated by 58 per cent to 42 per cent.
