A suicide attack close to the US embassy in Kabul Thursday killed three Afghan civilians, police said.

The bomber, who was driving a vehicle packed with explosives, detonated himself as a convoy of foreign forces was passing by, said Zemarai Bashary, Interior Ministry spokesman.

"Our initial information says that three civilians were killed and seven were wounded," Bashary said, adding that the number of casualties was likely to rise because the area was residential and many wounded people were taken to hospitals by their relatives.

A spokesman for the Public Health Ministry said 16 wounded people were evacuated to the city's three hospitals, dpa reported.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Thursday's attack, but Taliban militants have carried out hundreds of similar attacks in Afghanistan since their ouster in late 2001.
