Bangladesh on Sunday called for India and Pakistan to calm their tensions that have risen since last month's terrorist attack in Mumbai, dpa reported.

"We want peaceful resolution of issue of terrorism in the region," Bangladesh's foreign affairs adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury said.

He said terrorists must be identified and punished.

"But there is no reason for conflicts between states for this reason," he insisted.

"We need peace in South Asia to advance the welfare of our peoples which will benefit us all. The need for understanding and cooperation is in fact greater now than ever before."
