An Iraqi doctor convicted of plotting major car bombings in Britain was Wednesday given two life sentences by a court in London, meaning a minium of 32 years in jail.

Bilal Abdulla, 29, who was born in Britain but later returned to Iraq, was described by the judge at Woolwich Crown Court in London as a "religious extremist" who had intended to kill hundreds of innocent people.

The two attacks in London, on June 29, 2007, and in Glasgow, Scotland, a day later, failed owing to defective detonators.

Fellow-accused Mohammed Asha, a doctor from Jordan, was acquitted of the two charges of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions, reported dpa.
