Smartphone maker Research in Motion reports record sales

Research in Motion, the smartphone maker whose BlackBerry devices are the main US competitor to Apple's iPhone, reported record third quarter sales Thursday, and a profit rise of over 7 per cent to 396 million dollars, dpa reported.

The Canadian company also said it was enjoying its strongest-ever start to the holiday season as customers clamoured for its newly released BlackBerry Storm, the company's first touch screen device.

"We have not been able to meet demand for this product in North America," said Co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie in a conference call.

RIM said its quarterly revenue reached 2.78 billion dollars, up 66 per cent from the 1.67 billion dollars it booked in the year-ago quarter as its subscriber base grew 14 per cent to 21 million. The company said it shipped a record 6.7 million devices in the quarter.

RIM said it expected to sales of 3.3 billion dollars to 3.5 billion dollars in the fourth fiscal quarter with earnings per share of 83 cents to 91 cents.
