Dozens of protesters describing themselves as American Jews rallied outside the Israeli Consulate in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday to protest the Israeli "atrocities" in Gaza, Xinhua reported.
Wednesday's rally came as a surprise as American Jewry have always supported whatever Israel is doing.
Many of the demonstrators were carrying signs which read: "U.S. Jews say Gaza siege not in our name" and "We demand end to Israeli apartheid."
Organizers said they were outraged by "atrocities" resulting from the Israeli offensive in Gaza.
The protest prompted Los Angeles authorities to shut down Wilshire Boulevard where the targeted Israeli Consulate stands.
"We cannot stand by and let these atrocities happen," said 31- year-old Eric Romann, who chained herself to handrails at the building housing the Israeli Consulate.
"As a Jewish American, I came out because I believe what we are seeing are Israeli war crimes and that it's important for Jewish people opposed to the violence to speak out," said 29-year-old Lisa Adler who also chained herself to the building.
There have been a series of anti-Israeli protests outside the Israeli Consulate since Israel launched attacks on Gaza late last month. Pro-Israeli demonstrators also held rallies to show support for the attacks.
