Spain on Monday offered Iran help in normalizing its international relations after the election of Barack Obama as US president, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release, dpa reported.

Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos held talks with Ali Larijani, chairman of the Iranian parliament, during a visit by an Iranian parliamentary delegation to Madrid.

Moratinos and Larijani discussed a "new phase" in relations with the United States, according to the communique.

The Spanish minister told Larijani Iran could play a "constructive role" in the Middle East peace process within the framework of "strict respect" for United Nations decisions.

Diplomatic efforts to normalize Iran's situation would bear fruit if Teheran accompanied them with "positive gestures," Moratinos was quoted as saying.
