At least nine picnickers were killed and 34 injured when a bus carrying them fell from a hilly road into a ravine in Bangladesh's Bandarban district, 316 km southeast of capital Dhaka on Thursday evening.

The victims are students of Chittagong Government College and their guardians, private news agency UNB reported on Friday.

Two persons died on the spot while 7 died in different hospitals, Xinhua reported.

Sources were quoted by UNB as saying the bus rolled down the road, while returning to Chittagong carrying around 45 picnickers.

On information, army, police and Fire Brigade personnel rushed to the spot and carried out an extremely difficult rescue operation.

Witnesses said army personnel with the help of long ropes descended 300 feet (about 91 meters) down where the bus was lying.

They pulled up two bodies and 41 injured people from the pit of the ravine during their around 4-hour rescue operation that ended on Thursday midnight.

Officials concerned said two more people still remained missing.
