The United States Thursday greeted Germany's pledge to expand its NATO military commitment in Afghanistan, saying it will help secure the country in the lead-up to presidential elections later this year, dpa reported.
Geoff Morrell, press secretary of the Pentagon, said he hoped Germany would serve as an example to other countries to motivate more troop commitments before elections in August.
Morrell was at the NATO alliance meeting in Krakow.
German Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung earlier had announced his country would deploy an added 600 soldiers, including 200 to be sent on a temporary basis during the election period.,With 3,400 German troop already in Afghanistan, Germany is the third-largest contributor to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF.)
